Online Workshop for Divers and Boaties


Waiheke Marine Project have been meeting with Biosecurity NZ regarding the threat of Exotic Caulerpa Seaweed. This has resulted in the provision of an online workshop for marine enthusiasts (divers) to help  identify pest Caulerpa seaweeds, and therefore help prevent its spread to Waiheke Island.

Upcoming Opportunities

The WMP Regen Dive Training Programme was a huge success with 21 mana whenua and community members getting ticketed and now engaging in regenerative diving activities. Therefore, we have spent some time evaluating the programme and are now ready to run it again.

DOC requests community submissions


DOC (Department of Conservation) have asked us all to help revitalise the Hauraki Gulf by having our say on marine protection. This opportunity to provide feedback by submission closes at 1700 Friday 28 October 2022

Dual Award Nominations

What an honour to be acknowledged in the efforts to implement the 9 commitments from Future Search. We are humbled and happy to announce that we are finalists in the 2022 Sustainable Business Awards, for our collaboration alongside mana whenua and the Waiheke community working towards protection and regeneration of Waiheke Island's marine environment through the use of action-based kaitiakitanga - guardianship.

A Transition phase begins


The ‘Picking up the Paddle public meeting’ had further informed the structure and resources necessary for phase two and the team responded. Following a recruitment process, overseen by an independent Human Resources Consultant, Miranda Cassidy-O’Connell was chosen to take up the challenge, joining the co-coordinators, and volunteers.

It's about 70 days until Future Search and it's important that we start talking about it, but what is Future Search?

Future Search is a big get together, a meeting, a hui to discuss the marine environment around Waiheke Island and an opportunity to develop potential marine protection recommendations and an action plan.

Orca visit Matiatia, Waiheke Island

It's not often we hear positive news about the health of our oceans so it was pleasing in recent days to hear reports of Orca visiting Matiatia bay (our main ferry harbour). These welcome visitors add to recent reports of schooling Kahawai, diving Pied Shags, Dolphins and more visible nearby Motu. Are these beautiful creatures sending us a sign of what's possible if we focus on regeneration and kindness toward Tīkapa Moana He tohu?
