About Te Matuku Marine Reserve
About Te Matuku Marine Reserve
Te Matuku Marine Reserve is located in the far south east corner of Waiheke island, and protects one of Waiheke Island’s largest estuaries. Reaching out from Te Matuku bay, and into the Waiheke Channel.
The reserve comprises saltmarsh, mangroves, small longshore spits, tidal creek habitats and extensive intertidal flats. It is home to native and migrant birds, as the three small shell spits on the eastern side of Te Matuku Bay form natural roosting and nesting areas. The reserve also hosts spiny tubeworm colonies dotted over the intertidal flats, Strong tidal areas reveal patches of shell that are colonised by sponges, anemones and soft corals. Juvenile snapper and trevally are abundant around the reefs. Spotted dogfish and flatfish are common in Te Matuku Bay.
